Jazz Improv’s New York Jazz Guide for January Now Available!

 

            In July 2005, Jazz Improv®   began publishing a second magazine—Jazz Improv’s®   New York Jazz Guide & Directory. Each monthly issue is available free at over 200 jazz clubs, retail outlets, schools, hotels and so on. Features include interviews, reviews of recordings and performances, comprehensive calendar and performance listings for the New York area, a directory of clubs, venues, record and music stores, articles by Ira Gitler and others. For those jazz fans outside of the New York area, a complete edition is posted in the form of a downloadable PDF file at the Jazz Improv®  Magazine website: www.jazzimprov.com.

            The new January 2006 edition of Jazz Improv® New York features Sonny Rollins on the cover and a 16-page feature on the Saxophone Colossus. The feature includes interviews with trombonist Clifton Anderson (who has played trombone with Rollins for 20 years), Mark Soskin, bassist Larry Ridley, Freddie Hubbard; in addition to book and record reviews, a discography,  fascinating facts, and photos by Herb Snitzer, Andrew Lepley, and Don Ver Ploeg. The issue also includes a close-up look at Jazz At Lincoln Center by Eric Frazier, performance reviews of Banana Puddin’ Jazz Jam (Nuyorican Poets Café); Django Reinhardt NY Fest (Birdland); One For All (Smoke); Bobby Hutcherson (Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola) Maria Schneider (Jazz Standard); Oliver Lake-John Hicks Big Band (Jazz Gallery); Bennie Wallace (Shanghai Jazz); Joshua Redman (Blue Note). Articles include “The Printed Song Goes Digital.” There are also articles by Ira Gitler, Todd Coolman and Don Glasgo; interviews with Lew Tabackin, Ada Rovatti; and CD reviews of Ray Barretto, Matt Belzer, Art Blakey, Amanda Carr, George Dulin, Gene Ess, Clare Fischer, Wayne Goins, Onaje Allan Gumbs, Matt Jordan,  David Kain, Eugene Marlow, Wynton Marsalis, Monk: The Play, Russ Nolan, SF Jazz Quartet; Doug Ratner, Mark Sherman, Rolf Sturm, Judy Wexler.
